The Cooling System

No matter the make or model you drive, every traditionally powered automobile generates a tremendous amount of heat. Considering that the power is created from combustion, a series of small explosions in the cylinders, and that moving parts lead to a lot of friction, your vehicle must work hard to overcome the excessive engine temperatures. To account for this, the cooling system removes and dissipates heat. Coolant absorbs heat in the engine block, delivering it to the radiator and back through water hoses. The thermostat regulates the fluid flow. The radiator is responsible for heat exchange with the outside air. It’s located at the front of the car behind the grill for maximum air flow. Its design includes fins along its series of tubes, increasing surface area for outside air exposure and heat exchange. A fan also forces additional air across the radiator to aid in cooling. The heart of the system, however, is the water pump. Just as the human heart circulates blood through the body, the water pump moves coolant through the cooling system. The ASE-certified technicians at Motorcars International in Smyrna, Georgia, have been helping local drivers since 1981. If you’re experiencing water pump concerns or need other Lexus repairs, we’re here to help.

What You Should Know

Although Lexus is overall a great brand, there are some things you should know about potential water pump problems. While any vehicle can exhibit water pump failure, some Lexus models are prone to trouble. In addition to having Motorcars International perform routine preventive maintenance on your favorite European model, be vigilant so that you notice the signs of a failing water pump. One signal is an overheating warning or a higher-than-expected temperature indication on your dashboard. You may also hear whining or grinding coming from the engine. Coolant leaks can manifest as drips you observe under the car or crusty spots of dried fluid near the engine if you take a peek under the hood. Some Lexus models have become notorious for premature water pump failure, often occurring as soon as the 40,000-60,000-mile mark. These include the RX350, with widespread reports, and the 2018-2025 ES300h and NX250.

No Time to Waste

If you suspect a cooling system issue, there’s no time to waste. Overheating quickly leads to damage. Continuing to drive a vehicle once it’s too hot can even cause catastrophic engine failure that necessitates engine replacement. The reality is that it’s far less expensive to replace a failing water pump than to deal with the damage caused by a delayed response. If it’s time for routine maintenance or you think your water pump is past its prime, visit Motorcars International for Lexus Repair.
