Toyota Airbag Concern 

Airbags are an important safety feature of modern vehicles, saving thousands of lives each year and minimizing the severity of certain injuries. When a crash of greater severity than a minor fender bender occurs, the airbag system communicates via the electronic control unit with the inflator inside the airbag module. The inflator triggers the igniter to produce a chemical reaction. The byproduct, a gas not harmful to humans, inflates the front airbags in about 1/20th of a second. Side airbags deploy even quicker. While this protective system works perfectly nearly every time in most vehicles, there are some concerns about particular Toyota models. An Urgent Warning 

In late January 2024, Toyota sounded the alarm about the airbags in 50,000 of their own automobiles currently on the road. The recall includes the 2003-2004 Corolla, 2003-2004 Corolla Matrix, and 2004-2005 RAV4. While many vehicles across multiple brands have required repair or replacement of the notorious Takata airbags with problematic inflators, Toyota feels that the specified models are at a heightened risk because of their age. The fear is that the inflator might explode, sending dangerous metal projectiles toward occupants. The questionable airbags are located on the driver’s side of the RAV4 and the passenger side of the Corolla and Corolla Matrix. While other separate recalls involve the Corolla and Corolla Matrix, addressing the potential for airbag deployment in the absence of an accident, as well as the well-publicized Takata recall that impacted nearly every automaker, Toyota has issued a strong, urgent warning in regard to this situation. According to Toyota, “Owners SHOULD NOT DRIVE these vehicles until the FREE safety recall repair has been conducted.” In fact, they even recommend either mobile repair or towing to resolve the issue.
