Is Your Check Engine Light On?

Three Main Culprits for an Illuminated Check Engine Light

When that little light that looks like a genie bottle pops up on your dashboard, you can experience a sinking feeling in your stomach. Most drivers dread seeing an illuminated check engine light (CEL) on their dash. But why is yours on, and how can you fix the problem?

The automotive repair professionals at Motorcars International, Inc. in Smyrna, Georgia, can help. Here are three common reasons for your check engine light to be illuminated.

  1. Mass Airflow Sensor Failure
  2. Another reason your check engine light is on could be because of an issue with your car’s mass airflow sensor. This sensor measures the air mass that is flowing into your engine intake. This is crucial for calculating the amount of fuel to add in order to achieve the correct air-to-fuel ratio. If this sensor is failing, emission levels can rise or cause your car to stall, making it unsafe to drive. Mass airflow sensors can fail because of an air filter that was installed incorrectly or one that needs to be replaced.

  3. Faulty Spark Plugs
  4. If your check engine light is on, faulty spark plugs could be to blame. These parts seal the combustion chambers in your engine. Spark plugs also deliver electric currents from the ignition system to your car’s combustion chamber, powering the engine. If your spark plugs need replacing, you might also experience engine misfires. To prevent this from happening, replace your spark plugs every 40,000 to 80,000 miles.

  5. Loose Gas Cap
  6. One of the simplest reasons for your CEL to be on is because of a loose gas cap. If you’ve recently fueled up, check to see if your gas cap is on tight enough. If it’s loose, screw it until it’s snug against your car. If your CEL is now off, great! If this indicator is still glowing, you will have to do some further investigation.
