A Volkswagen History Lesson

In 1937, Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH was established. However, after realizing the company name would be difficult for people to say, the company was renamed Volkswagenwerk GmbH in September of 1938.

Shortly after, construction on a new factory began to produce a new car designed by Ferdinand Porsche. During the Second World War, the company concentrated on producing armaments rather than automobiles. In 1945, the British military government took control of the Volkswagenwerk plant, and mass production of the distinctive VW Beetle began.

During the early 1950s, Volkswagen expanded its product line, introducing the popular Volkswagen Bus. Because of its versatility, the van’s popularity grew, prompting the construction of a separate manufacturing plant in Hanover, and the Volkswagen commercial vehicle division was born.

In 1972, Volkswagen announced that 15,007,034 vehicles had been assembled, breaking the world record. In 1973, the Volkswagen Passat was introduced, followed by the Volkswagen Golf in 1974 and the Golf GTI in 1976. In 1983, Volkswagen introduced automation to the auto industry, as they began using robots to make their cars.

In late 2002, production of a compact van called the Touran began, which was most notable for its use of a new collective pay model, which emphasized flexible working hours and leaner production, as well as a more team-oriented approach and the application of more expertise during production. In 2003, the company began production on the fifth generation of the Volkswagen Golf, introducing changes and improvements in engineering and design.

In 2008, Volkswagen announced plans for a $1 billion assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to produce cars and SUVs for the North American market. In 2018, Volkswagen announced that production of the iconic Beetle would end in 2019.
